Why we used double lap shear joint?
When a single lap joint is loaded in tension it twists, due to its asymmetry, which results in “peel” forces on the adhesive. The symmetry of a double-lap joint means that it doesn’t twist and when loaded in tension the resultant forces on the adhesive are in “shear”. The shear strength of an adhesive is much greater than the peel strength.
If you every put a bit of tape on a table and try to pull it off, you would peel it off upwards, you wouldn’t try to pull it off sideways because it would be really hard. That is basically how these joints work. They are exceptionally strong.
